Nottingham Santa Run 2011

There’s nothing like a run on a crisp December morning to wake you up and set you up for the day ahead. When you, and hundreds of other like minded people, dress up as Santa and do it for charity, it can’t fail to put a smile on your face too.

This morning myself, and my four regular running friends, took part in the Nottingham Santa Run 2011.  This 5k run around Wollaton Park in Nottingham is set in the midst of the impressive Wollaton Hall, which was recently used as Wayne Manor during the filming of the lastest Batman film ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, due for release in Summer 2012.

This wasn’t a day for being competitive, or for chasing personal bests. It was all about having fun, soaking up the friendly atmosphere and raising money for a fantastic charity in When You Wish Upon A Star. This charity does great work for children suffering from life threatening illnesses, granting them wished to make their dreams come true. This can range from simple things such as books and toys, to meeting pop stars or sporting heroes, through to magical trips to Lapland.

The hundreds of Santas were prepared for action with a Zumba warm up, before lining up behind Santa in his car, ready for the run.

Apart from the uphill start, and the downhill to the finish line, the route was pretty flat and took in tree lined paths, passing the golf course and lake.  As regular runners, this was not at all strenuous for us, but was still a very enjoyable and scenic route. At the finish line, it was obvious that a lot of participants were not regular runners though with many people lying on their back or trying to catch their breath. I have to applaud everybody who took part as they all put in a great effort. 5k may not sound much of a distance to some people, but having only been running myself for a few years, I know how much of a struggle it can be!

All in all this was a very enjoyable day out, in aid of a great cause, with a very friendly atmosphere. It certainly put a smile on our face and we’ll definitely be back next year!
